The way humans behave in the world we live in is even a bigger mystery than the universe itself. Think about this way: We already have a fair amount of knowledge about how the world works and the physical laws that rule them, but we don’t have a solid idea about why humans behave the way they do.
It is a bit crazy to think we know way more about physic laws and other mysteries about the world rather than knowing more about us, about humans! It is crazy, yes, but it is incredibly accurate.
And author Philip Ball realised this and decided to talk about it, to fill in the gap regarding the way humans behave and why we do what we do. In Critical Mass: How One Thing Leads to Another, he explains this from a unique point of view.
You see, in the book, the author states the obvious: Physics laws rule the world as we know it. That isn’t a secret to anyone. However, he also says that, although social laws may govern the way humans behave, there are enormous gaps in them. So, what would happen if physical laws could apply to social laws?
That is the whole premise and main idea of the book: What would happen if you could take the physical laws we already know and love, and apply them to the social rules to understand why humans behave the way they do?
Through the book, author Philip Ball will keep up bringing this question up; however, he answers it with great eloquence, using nothing but previous essential researches and studies that help him get the point across.
The book is written to give you the sensation you are in fact reading a science research paper; however, it doesn’t turn boring or becomes difficult to read at any moment. If anything, it gets more and more interesting as you do.
Throughout Critical Mass: How One Thing Leads to Another, we explore human behaviour through different points of views like historical and economical, while also touching on diverse topics such like chemistry, physics, ethics and more.
It is likely you will end up having a bit of a midlife crisis when reading this book since the author does state nothing of what we do is entirely up to us, and that free will doesn’t. But hey, it is a great book after all!
